Healthy Body Beatitude - Work Your Stomach for a Stronger Back and a Better Belly

If you suffer form back problems, an obvious solution is to strengthen the muscles in your back, however, what most people don’t realize is that strengthening your stomach muscles (abs) will also help alleviate back problems as well. By strengthening your stomach muscles you are providing support you the entire core of you body which will help to support you spine taking much of the pressure off of your back. The bonus is that strengthening your abs will also help to flatten your stomach.

Simple Stomach Crunches – Health Body Beatitude #2
Here is one effective exercise to strengthen your upper abs. A crunch is similar to a sit up however instead of lifting your entire back off of the floor you only lift your upper back off of the floor.

Lie flat on your back with your legs together and knees bent at 90 degrees with your feet flat on the floor. Cross your arm over your chest with the palm of each hand flat on the opposite shoulder.

Flex the muscles in your stomach (hold your stomach muscle in tight) as you slowly curl you shoulders and upper back about an inch and a half to two inches off the floor. Exhale when you reach the top of the curl and hold the curl for about three seconds. Breathe in slowly as you gently lower your back down to a lying position

Beginners can repeat this movement 10 times, rest and repeat for another 10 crunches. As you become more comfortable with this exercise you can increase the repetitions or the number of sets that you are performing. Strong abdominal muscles are essential in building a strong core. Strengthening your core along with a balanced diet are the key to reducing unwanted inches around your waistline.
