Beat the heat, stay hydrated

Innisfil Scope

A hot dry summer! Isnít that what we are all wishing for? Well I guess that wishes do come true because that is what the experts are predicting this summer. And with a hot summer on tap, itís very important to stay hydrated.
Dehydration is the number one cause of heat stress disorders including heat exhaustion and heat stroke which can quickly become a serious medical emergency. Since thirst is a very poor indicator of dehydration very often we do not realize we are at risk. A good rule to remember is on hot days you should remember to drink about 8oz of water an hour even if you donít feel thirsty. Also remember that drinking caffeine on a hot day can make the symptoms of heat stress disorder appear quicker and may make the symptoms more severe.
Drinking an electrolyte solution such as a carbohydrate or hydrate drink can greatly reduce your risk of heat related illness by replacing electrolytes back into your system. Electrolytes are the most common salt in the human body and important in helping your body to operate at peak performance. One of the best liquids you can drink to stay hydrated is coconut water. Coconut water is low in fat and calories, has no cholesterol, and has a natural balance of sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium- making it a healthy electrolyte drink.
Enjoy the hot summer and stay hydrated!
